question for today
Temper tantrum . . . nervous breakdown . . . We use the phrases interchangeably. What do you think? Same thing? Different? Please compare and contrast.

Well, I think a temper tantrum always involves an outburst and possible throwing of inanimate objects. Whereas a nervous breakdown often manifests as complete verbal, emotional and physical shutdown.

So they might be different things. lol ;)

Of the two, I'd prefer the temper tantrum because it's over faster. Hopefully :)

Happy New Year!

Dear Anne,

Happy New Year to you. This is an interesting point you raise and I never thought these terms were interchangeable. Nervous breakdown, to me, usually means depression which is most often quiet and desperate. I think inability to express anger can, in fact, lead to breakdown. Often it is the people who throw temper tantrums who induce nervous breakdowns in others. My mother was a case in point. She was a mistress of euphemism, but she would never have called her tantrums a breakdown. In fact, she had the tantrums, I had the breakdown.

My field is nutrition and I have only peripheral dealings with depression etc, though I have met many depressed people in my work.

I would love to know more about what you think, either here, or email.

Yours,

Ghislaine
