google's choice
In the interests of not having snap reactions, I am willing to hear what google's reasoning is in being willing to censor searches in China (article here) but it's mighty hard to think of an explanation that makes any sense from any point of view except sucking up to someone who's paying you.

I have a vague memory of an article on this a year or two ago, and it referring to Google's position being along the lines of 'better they get some of the value of it than no access to it at all...' But I'm hard-pressed to remember where I saw that. Wired?

The article I saw and was reacting to was Google's announcement last week (1/24) when they announced that they were willing to self-censor/restrict people's results. Last year was their discussion of going into China at all, I think. Here's the only link I can still get that doesn't require signing up: http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/01/24/D8FBCF686.html.
