pc'ness
More and more as I get older, I try to accept what anyone says or espouses, without objection if at all possible without being dishonest. So I'm wondering whether political correctness is being taken to Beckett-like extremes in an example DADvocate has brought to our attention in a post about hot cross buns being outlawed in Great Britain which the British Telegraph also wrote about. The tasty bready morsels are traditional breakfast food during Easter and they seem innocuous to me. But, no. Seems the icing, in two lines across the square tops, is meant to suggest a cross and therefore Christianity is referred to and therefore non-Christians might be offended. (Who knows/remembers the origin of the icing and does anyone pay attention to it? Shall we ban matzoh lest non-Jews feel offended?) In order to keep a sense of perspective, I genuinely don't know whether my first reaction is simply a "reaction" or not. I would therefore like to take a completely unscientific poll and find out whether you, dear reader, think the hot cross bun removal is (1) gracious and perfectly reasonable in the interests of us all getting along or (2) overdoing an attempt to not cause offense.

Oh please. This one's just ripe for some good old British satire and I hope some bright comedy writers do a proper send up of the whole idea. Is anything with 2 crossed lines fair game fro banning? What's next -- plaid, graph paper? Are the illiterate going to be forced to make check marks instead of x's? I, for one, will not be giving up hot cross buns. They're one of my favorite foods, and I'm not even a Christian.

This is beyond ridiculous! The whole "PC" mentality makes me crazy - in the logn run we will all need to sit in complete silence, wrapped in some colorless (not white, as that might be offensive!) garb, not thinking, not moving barely breathing so NO ONE is potentially offended.

Dont get me wrong, I am all for being sensative to others, but at some point, this needs to stop! They are ICING LINES PEOPLE, and whether they have religious roots or not is insignificant unless they are checking to see if you are a card carrying church member before they allow you to eat them!

*sigh* what is this world coming to?

People stupid enough to take offense should have the word "Stupid" written on their foreheads in icing. Nobody's forcing them to eat the buns if they don't like the crosses. This is just good old religious intolerance dressed up to look silly. I wonder how that old song would go if the word "cross" was deleted? "Hot..hm..buns. Hot..hm..buns, one-a-penny, two-a-penny hot..hm.buns." But someone's sure to object to the term "hot buns", right?

My vote is for (2). It's ridiculous, the lengths people go to to pretend everyone is all alike, and in the end it only serves to underline differences all the more.

Are they going to change "Deer Xing" signs now to something more ecumenical?

I love the idea that "deer xing" could cause a problem! Thanks for the big chuckle!! (and let's hope it doesn't happen - but who'd have thought hot cross buns....?!)
