11/11 - veterans day
Doesn't it seem odd to say "happy" when observing Veterans Day? Partly it's just verbal custom but there's also the point that we are grateful that people have been willing to risk their lives for their countries. Nevertheless, when one visualizes the reality of a soldier's life, it bogles the mind. There's a ton of magnificent literature - poetry, non-fiction, novels - not to mention movies - that makes it easier to picture but I'm sure nothing comes even close to the actual experience. I can't imagine willingly putting yourself in the path of bayonets and guns. But thank goodness some people perform astonishing acts of bravery, including the act of being there. Col Jack Jacobs, a Medal of Honor recipient for saving over a dozen lives in Vietnam, acknowledges that "it was very unpleasant" but says simply "it had to be done." The quiet, steady courage of soldiers is stunning.

Several times today, let's stop and remember, think about, pay respect and send thanks for the courage and strength of all the soldiers who have protected our world.
