book review
The apparently excellent book by Mark Steyn is called "American Alone: the end of the world as we know it". The engrossing and entertaining review is by Christopher Hitchens', of the book. Neither of these writers ever minces words or fails to say what he thinks. (h/t Bookworm Room and City Journal)

Thanks for the pointer. It was a good read and a good reminder that Islam is not monolithic, something that's sometimes hard to remember when Muslim views seem so alike. The best refutation of that I have found is altmuslim.com, a multi-person blog in Austin run by an Indian Muslim who is quite moderate and does not carry water for the Islamists.

Well, I take it back. I've been doing some searching through their archives and altmuslim.com is not as moderate as I thought. Rather anti-Israel in fact. Are all Muslims? I don't know. This is a subject I've struggled with, trying to decide what moderate means in terms of Islam. I can see Bush's problem, for instance, in not wishing to be at war with billions of Muslims the world over, although his calling Islam a "religion of peace" doesn't seem quite right either.
