on warming and humor
Either we made it happen or we didn't. If we did, or even if we contributed a lot, then we can change it a lot. Right? Well, no, according to the GW proponents (who have probably not noticed that their acronym is two-thirds of that of a certain head of state whom they loathe). I mean, if people did lots of this damage with cars and hairspray, then wouldn't stopping using hairspray and cars at least turn things back a bit? . . . . but those 'in the know' say no cuz we've done ourselve in and there's nothing we can do to help. Balderdash, of course.

Not surprisingly, Mark Steyn has written about global warming. Never at a loss for informative, amusing and enlightening words, this is no exception. He throws in some actual facts that support what I've suspected, such as
A thousand years ago, the Arctic was warmer than it is now. Circa 982, Erik the Red and a bunch of other Vikings landed in Greenland and thought, "Wow! This land really is green! Who knew?" So they started farming it, and were living it up for a couple of centuries. Then the Little Ice Age showed up, and they all died.
Those who hate GBW just know the heat age is here, and those who don't hate him think there may be a big millenial cycle underway. Someday it will be factually clear. I wonder if we'll be able to find out, where we are then.

Inasmuch as the 1960s and 1970s Prophets of Doom were proven completely wrong - and you'll wait in vain for the bastards to apologize - I figure that the current batch is no brighter, at least partially because at the heart of it are the same bastards.

Yeah but what do you really think? (And you're so right!)

Here's a link to archaeology.org that elaborates on Steyn's point about Greenland with current photos of Eric the Red's farm. It's too cold to farm it now.

cghill makes a good point about the gloom and doom forecasters. A couple of weeks ago, Discovery channel had a series one day of how the human race might end: nuclear war, asteroids, super volcanoes, global warming, etc. After watching several of these, my son had to change the channel, too scary. But one of his observations was why worry about global warming when all this other stuff might happen.

Potential disaster overload. When faced with too many disasters, just don't worry about any of them.

Good points, Dad. I saw the promo for that show, as a matter of fact, and had the same reaction as your son. Reminds me of those 1950s films when the schoolchildren practiced going under their desks for when "the bomb" was dropped - that must have been terrifying! I'm not sure about the point of listing all the horrors that might befall, unless there's info about what we can do to prevent them.
