AI6 thought
There's tons of chatter about backwards support for Sanjaya perhaps bringing down American Idol. Ligneus pointed me to a blog post which linked to a Times (of London) article about how the UK version was brought down similarly. People who don't like the show are delighted, as are people who have problems with phenomena that succeed on this kind of scale. (Ain't human nature lovely sometimes?) That hunger strike some woman is on was (is?) a joke, for heaven's sake, beginning with a hyperbolic "I'm not going to eat again until Sanjaya's off" and now everyone talks as if someone's actually starving to death over the androgynous bad singer. Puleez give me a break. If Sanjaya were to bring it down, it would mean that either the producers haven't controlled the votes or that they do and they're tired of the show and figure this is an amusing way to shut it down. What do you think?

From the point of view of all the people involved in the show, it's a serious business, aka Money! It provides employment for a lot of people and a few lucky/talented people do well where they otherwise might not have done. Jennifer Hudson for instance. I'm very happy for her, I liked her on the show and was sorry when she got kicked off.
Why the sour grapes from some because some people are making a lot of money for something they think stupid? If you don't like it, don't watch it. I don't hear the same gripes about people who win the lottery, who have done absolutely nothing to get the money plus it's at other people's expense, all be it people who are willing to play the stupid things.

From the point of view of the viewers and fans of the show, it's a bit of fun folks! Stop taking it and yourselves so seriously. And I might add, it's much more entertaining than about 99% of the other stuff on tv.

I hope you don't think I'm one of the upset people. I totally agree with you and if it sounds otherwise, clearly I need to write better!!

Survivor and that ilk of "reality" show bother me because they are so contrived - but I just don't watch them. I think some people hate it that perfectly ordinary people have so much talent and gumption that they really make it big. I also think that the audition phase seems like laughing at poor and sick people, sometimes, but - again - no one is forcing anyone to watch! If the ratings were low, it would go away.

Don't you think most people watch simply because it's fun to see untrained people do well? And it's fun to be surprised by Chris Daughtrys and Elliott Yamins and Jordins. (I have far more trouble with Melinda because of her semi-professionalism than with Sanjaya who is so obviously an amateur, by the way.)

And you're SO right about it being far more entertaining than almost anything else out there.

No jau, I didn't think you were one of the upset people, I was thinking more of the woman on hunger strike over Sanjaya and all the people voting for him just to try to discredit and bring the show down.

I've never watched Survivor also, but one show I like a lot is Corner Gas, a Canadian comedy sit-com set in a small town on the prairies in Alberta, it's quite clever, great characters in it.

Glad you didn't think that was me! Whew.

Never heard of Canadian Gas - when's it on? I'm enjoying Raine so far. Quirky but not overly so and the roughest characters have been tenderly written, which is an unusual adjective for such shows.

It's Corner Gas, set in Saskatchewan not Alberta as I said. Apparently they've signed a deal with Superstation WGN cable network to show it in the States. I likewise haven't seen Raine, I don't have cable so there are a lot of things I don't see. Switching the TV on would help too.

One other thought on AI, a lot of people get upset because the judges are 'mean' and 'unkind' to some of the 'self-esteemed' un-talented contestants who truly think they are the next Elvis or Whitney. The only thing cruel about it is that someone didn't set them straight when they were kids.
