Magic
There's a magician on Craig Ferguson's show at the moment, Rick Thomas. I don't remember being so struck before by the horror of the woman being sawed in half which must mean this guy makes it seem even more real than most. I know there are mirrors or she folds herself in tiny tiny halves and doesn't really get hurt, but I have no idea how he does it. Not to mention turning scarves into batons or batons into birds or birds into girls. He's fabulous.

Just when I was getting bored with the whole idea of sawing women in half - this would be, oh, ten years ago or so - one fellow actually delivered on a variation I'd once suggested in jest:

"Saw her in half lengthwise."

Darnedest thing I ever saw.

That would be FANTASTIC! Since it's all a visual illusion (I think), why not?! Awesome idea.

Somewhere out there is a movie called Women in Boxes: it's a documentary about magicians' assistants, who do a lot (perhaps most) of the work and never get any credit. No word on screenings or DVDs yet, though there's a trailer posted at womeninboxes.com.

I am, as you might have guessed, a major fan of illusion, optical and otherwise; I once spent three weeks tracking down an obscure indie film about a glum guy whose life improves markedly when he meets a girl no one can see. (And of course he's too dumb to realize how much it's improved.) I eventually got a DVD-R from the director.
