Sports standards
Having only recently become (only slightly) interested in baseball, I have to wonder aloud why it is that a player is a fair-haired darling of the owners and managers and fans when things are going well but then is the scourge of the earth and worthy to be tarred and feathered when there is a glitch in his performance. Case in point: Yankee pitcher Mike Mussina could do almost no wrong a few weeks ago and was being talked about in altogether glowing terms. Then he lost three games in a row and has been more or less benched ("will not be available out of the pen"). One sportscaster even said "he's probably pitched his last game as a Yankee". Doesn't that seem a tad harsh? Can't you have a slow time or need to rest your arm or something? I'm all for high standards and demanding top notch performance, but this seems silly. On the other hand, I haven't paid much attention to baseball before, so maybe I don't know the customs.

I think the Yankees and their rabid fans are a breed apart even in the baseball world.

Baseball is the only sport I can watch these days, not bad for and ex Brit!
Hockey is all those guys rushing about the ice just like they were forty years ago.
Basketball. Basketball! That's a sport? Like someone said, they should give each team 100 points and let them play for three minutes.
Tennis. Well women's tennis is OK. Anna, Jelena, Maria......
Soccer. Used to like it before it became a game for cry babies.
Boxing. Used to like it before they had three world champions per division.
Wrestling. Enough said.
Football. If they had any more protection they'd be driving tanks.
Polo. It was more fun when they used a sheep's head instead of that little white ball.
Golf. Another little white ball game, I guess it wouldn't work with a sheep's head.
Athletics. Now I think of it I do quite like athletics, specially running at all the distances. Hurdles is kind of silly.
Did I mention I'm not big on sport?

Awesome dissertation, ligneus! I laughed all the way. Hmm, yes, I think I get that you're not a big sports fan!

Tricky link - finally got it. Thanks - a good read. Depressing, given the "ruling party", though.
