server troubles
Three sites that I visit regularly are having errors, saying "Unable to connect to database server" and "Can't connect to MySQL" and "WordPress database error: [Out of memory]". On some level, it's good news that this happens to non-blogger.com sites, but it's frustrating because there's no way to alert anyone without an email address. Maybe the internet wanted everyone to take today off.

Having just lost a 7000-post database, I can relate.

On the other hand, I still have all the actual posts; they're just not linked from the front page anymore.

Holy cow!! I guess the whole process is still less firm-footed than it would seem. I'm SO glad you have the posts, at least.

Well, I thought I was doubly safe: I run an export of the database on a regular basis, which I store at home, and the host runs daily backups.

This time, the host's backup proved to be dubious, and my last export, which looked like it was up to date, was missing about two months.

Ultimately, I decided it was better to clean the slate and start over - although I made a point of putting the new posts in a separate directory so they can't overwrite the old ones.
