Cancelled tv shows
In case you're curious, you can pretty much figure out what tv shows will be cancelled by checking my level of enthusiasm. Well, not a hundred percent of the time but very nearly. Apparently American Idol's lead-in was stronger than my enthusiasm-of-death for House because it's still doing well even though I've liked it all along. I do hope I haven't jinxed the second season of Damages, however.

I have to wonder what the producers' reasoning is when they give us strong and interesting characters who become part of our lives . . . and then they yank them away without warning or time to prepare. After all, you'd know if you're coming to the end of a book.

I may have inherited this curse from my father. We both enjoyed the Robert Urich "Spenser" series - especially the Hawk characterization. And we both liked Tom Selleck's version of the Jesse Stone novels by Robert Parker. Last year I was a fan of James Woods' Shark mostly because I loved the relationship between Shark and his daughter, difficult and loving and layered. In shows like these, central plots may be clichéd and/or silly but none have clichéd or predictable characters.

The current example is this and last year's Eli Stone. It had some simplistic flaws and even a few wince-worthy moments but it made an attempt to mix drama with humor and even outrageousness now and then, even occasional flamboyance. Watching it was a lot of fun. Who'd have thought George Michael could be charming as a recurrent figment of someone's imagination? Who'd have known that Victor Garber could break into song and dance right after delivering a serious legal argument and be terrific fun? Or that Katie Holmes could be a rousing song and dance girl herself? All that was true, however, and yet last night appears to have been the final aired episode. No warning to the writers so they could wrap up story lines. No warning to viewers so we could wrap up our feelings. It's as if a whole bunch of acquaintances were just vaporized. It's unfair to them, and to us.

Update
I think there must be a few Calvinist bones lurking in my body because it always feels like giving in if I even consider admitting I'm sick. But after a coughy and sneezy night, I took a sick day today, my first this year. The plan is to watch some of the Kay Francis movies I've recorded and see how much chicken soup I can eat. Doesn't chicken soup taste wonderful when it hits the spot perfectly? And thank heaven for Tylenol Severe Cold which seems to keep the drippy nose under control without making me stop breathing, bless it.

Update - 4 pm - Definitely feeling better. Thanks for all the good wishes!!!

Bookstore moves and expands!
In Los Angeles, a wonder-of-wonder has occurred.  A bookstore has closed . . . because it's moving down the block and getting more space and more books.  Check out this story!  I've long been of the opinion that bookstores that do not have snobby attitudes and that do have specialized stock or knowledge can thrive even in this nutty time.  There are dozens of stores proving my point in and around Washington DC (of all places) and even a few in Dutchess and Ulster counties in New York.  I know there are many stories of bookstores that close and attribute the problem to B&N or WalMart or Sam's Club or some other monolithic monster.  But I really feel certain that if DC can support bookstores, other communities can do it.  If all the commuters I see reading every day are at all representative of the world at large, then books and printed matter aren't nosediving, they're just changing delivery methodologies or something like that.  So three cheers to Skylight Books - hurrah and congratulations to them!!

Cable tv
Like many before me, I've come to loathe and despise Time Warner Cable service. They twist customers' arms to make us pay more for fewer channels that are less reliably available, month after month. The latest two to fall by the wayside seem to be TBS and ESPN Classic. I realize that no one's world will be significantly improved or worsened with or without these two channels, but it's not free so I don't see why we don't get to say "no" or pay less or something. Actually, I do see because the point is that they want to force us to migrate to digital cable and maybe they think if they take away all the channels, one by one, we'll just scream uncle and agree to digital. Myself, I'm holding out for FIOS which is Verizon which is its own set of monopolistic gobbledeegook, but at least there are over two hundred channels and reputedly awesome reception all for less than we're paying now for TWC. The whole thing is so galling - the phone and television offerings. It's one of those things that we ought to have raised the roof about but we've let it go so long that raising the roof now will still leave the floodwaters leaking in through the floorboards. (Too many metaphors, but you know what I mean.)

Update. Now (Sunday morning) there's a message on the TWC phone saying that a bunch of channels' reception is messed up and "appreciating" customers' patience. I wish it was all right to write the words that $%^&* represents because this is ridiculous. Those channels have been off the air for two days already and I'd bet a lot of money that they'll be off until the holiday weekend is over. Monopolistic cable companies are wrong.

Judgment?
Haven't parents travelling with babies, especially on a 90-minute commuter train, ever heard of bringing toys and food? What's wrong with people???! I know the effect of such negligence is cruel to the rest of us, but isn't it neglect and cruelty to the baby, too?

Wedding anxiety
One of my brothers is getting married this spring. One happy result that I'm very much looking forward to is becoming and gaining a sister-in-law. One distressful effect is that I need three nice outfits for the various get-togethers. Since I'm neither size 2 nor young and sylph-like, and I don't like 'ordinary' clothes, buying them is unpleasant under the best of circumstances and torture when it matters. If anyone has unusual stores to recommend, especially online, I would be eternally grateful.

The other stressful thing that I'm anxious about is their gift. Since they're both successful adults and have pretty much everything they want, and since I really really want it to be special and really really appreciated, I'm at a loss to know what to make. Big, small, elegant, casual, comfy, fancy, colorful, sophisticated, personal, . . . the choices are too many and overwhelming. I knit and crochet and therefore want to make them something special, probably for their house. Hey, if I carry on long enough, it'll be too late for me to make anything and I'll have to just go throw money at something instead. Dumb, knowing how this could play out and still freaking out over it.

Question
While I'm b*ing and moaning about things internet, I wonder if anyone has a suggestion as to how to actually really and truly remove oneself from Yahoo calendars. Several years ago I set one up for a multi-person engagement. It served a useful purpose because we could all log into it and make changes or comments. After the occasion happened, I said bye-bye and clicked all the apparently requisite things to disassociate myself from it. Every Tuesday, however, like the reliable clockwork that it can be when you want it to be, I get a reminder. I'm incredibly sick of it and tired of deleting it. Besides, surely technological space could use that little piece of memory for someone who actually wants it. Any ideas?

high and low
File this under "I wish I had time to read or write anything interesting but I have to search through all my papers to find just the one I absolutely need for tomorrow morning and which wasn't where it was supposed to be". The good news is that a Bollywood spoof is on USA right now and it's perfect background for looking through papers - it'd be good for wrapping Christmas presents all night, too. The bad news is that I haven't found the paper yet. The fun news is that I came upon the (not surprisingly) misfiled wedding announcement of a good friend from 1993 (egad). Times like this I wish I were as organized at home as I am at work. Yeeha! I found it!

the closer
Maybe pieces of wool fluff interfered with transmissions to my brain, what with all the yarn passing by it, but I was quite unable to figure out what was going on in the first part of The Closer tonight (a show I always make time for - it's awesome). Knight Rider's car's voice, come to life as an un-retired operative, may not be entirely a good guy, but who did what and to whom and why, shot right by me. Anyone. . . ?

about living alone
There are many good things about living alone. I will wax rhapsodic about them, here, one of these days. But today I want to whine. If you live alone and you're home sick, everyone says "drink lots of tea" and "stay home until you feel better" when what you want them to say is "hurry back" and "it's no fun without you". Pathetic, really. Am I sorry enough for myself or what?

"there were errors" (no kidding)
This is beyond unacceptable. As an extension of yesterday's mulberry bush, around which we are going 'round and 'round yet again, I have to say that it's madness to be unable to publish, still. Goggle Groups are packed with people saying the same thing. And the beta blogs are working, in case it's not crazy enough. Google should tell us if this is unfixable and they have just decided to chuck regular blogger, shouldn't they? I keep hitting "publish post" in hopes it'll work and every now and then it does. I guess the good news is that at least it's saving what I write. I've asked before and I'll ask again: if they don't want to support a free service, they shouldn't offer it but if they do offer it, they should support it. Or am I missing something? Update - I cannot believe it but at 1:20 on Sunday things are STILL broken. It is actually not to be believed. Among the hundreds of Google Group reports about how awful this weekend has been was a comment that blooger.com started going downhill after Google bought it. If that's true, then we'd better migrate somewhere else because I'm putting bets on blogger.com going out the window and beta becoming the way of the future...and why should it work any better since it's a hundred percent Google's? 1:35 - After clearing my cache and logging off (which wasn't enough) and then rebooting, I can publish. Finally. Now to decide whether to stay. The problem is that, like many blogger.com users, I like to be able to edit my html. If beta disallows that, combined with all this nonsense, then what?

the mulberry bush
There's no publishing on blogger again today. They keep saying they're fixing the outdated servers but why don't they at least notify us? I mean, there are two bazillion people using blogger so you'd think they want us staying. Update - almost two hours later (3:18) it's still not working. Neither through posts nor republish. Preview is the only thing that works. This is getting tired. Update again - it's 6:10 and working sporadically. Note to self: save post or you may have to rewrite the whole thing. Ugh ugh and double ugh.

oh so common
Refrain though I usually do from tales of personal wellbeing or lack thereof, let me say that I don't know how those who blog while cold-y do it. I am now in the blowing (red) nose and drippy eye sequence, so I'm actually feeling better than I sound and look. (Ah the vagaries of the so-called common cold.) I'm engaging in post-expression again. (Hmm... "post" expression... a phrase to consider... hmm.... who is evidently drugged today.... who?)

i hate to say it...
I am loathe to complain about Blogger since (a) it's free, and (b) it works really well a lot of the time (wide range from 60-95% of the time), and (c) I've learned tons about html and web building thanks to their service and the amount of interaction it allows, and (d) I am therefore very and eternally grateful. Nevertheless it is incredibly thoroughly totally enormously annoying to get error messages and lose work day after day, always right after writing or designing something (never after a minor tweak, of course). TPTB often put up messages about "shutting down at 4 p.s.t." or words to that effect. So it wouldn't be entirely out of character if they put up something like "server trouble - please go away for ten minutes" or something less sarcastic but equally to the point. It would bolster our sense of not being incompetent, for one thing, and would let us know to just go do something else for a while. Plus, it would be good public relations. Right?

knitting doldrums
I realized today that I haven't knit in several weeks. At night I've gotten sidetracked by reading or plain relaxing (you know, where you flop on the fabulously comfy sofa and don't move?) or fussing over the blog or with something else on the computer. Since holidays and fall birthdays are steadily approaching every nearer, this is not a good thing. Other than the sheer imposition of self-discipline, which will add a note of distinct non fun, I wonder what to do?

cars, cont.
I dutifully went on a car hunting expedition (admittedly half-heartedly), first stopping at a Nissan dealer which has been recommended by a friend, but they were closed (on Labor Day?!). Then I wandered the Suburu and Toyota lots where the cars looked like farmers' market vegetables at the end of a hot day (dusty and wilted) and way too many incomplete papers on the cars. Can you say car dealers are out to get you? A couple of no-name dealers (you know the kind: Jenny's Auto Mart - not a real name) had some cute cars but I assume one should steer clear of them unless you know they're okay. My last stop was at a big dealership with, they proudly say, five locations. The salesman showed me a few kind-of-okay cars, none ideal, and then he walked me to his desk to talk numbers even though I hadn't driven or chosen anything. He asked for my license and current registration saying he wanted to see what he could offer on trade-in (is that the way it's usually done?). When he tucked the photocopies into his desk calendar it kind of freaked me out and then he went off to do something unexplained (which I later learned was getting plates so we could test drive). When he came back I asked for the photocopy (it just occurred to me that I hope it was the only one). He seemed upset and asked what he'd done wrong; he looked puzzled when I said he was putting the cart (trading in my car) before the horse (me picking a car). His manager came over, wearing fewer pinkie rings but seeming more sleezy in that he grinned a lot and said gee he had just the car for me coming in later this week so he'll call me about it. Golly. Here's hoping next weekend will be better.

i don't want to
Today I have to make a first pass at buying a new (or new-old) car. Mine is 10 years old and the inspection won't pass so it's just got to be done and today is almost the last day of the dealers' clear the lots of last year's models sales. Once I get there, I probably will be fine but it's hard to gear (heh) myself up to be choosy and decisive, all the while fending off the wily car salesmen.

server troubles
Three sites that I visit regularly are having errors, saying "Unable to connect to database server" and "Can't connect to MySQL" and "WordPress database error: [Out of memory]". On some level, it's good news that this happens to non-blogger.com sites, but it's frustrating because there's no way to alert anyone without an email address. Maybe the internet wanted everyone to take today off.

disgruntled
I feel discombobulated and at sixes and sevens today, to use an old-fashioned colloquialism. The weather is part of the problem: it's been raining off and on for a day less than a week and I'm sick of it. No doubt I should invest in one of those lamps but I'd much prefer this incessant grayness to just stop. I seem to always feel a bit of a let down after several days of visitors even though I'm happy that they (came and) left. I'm distressed about the whole media thing with arresting John Karr without any discernible factual reason to do so (confessions of a crackpot being neither factual nor dependable reasons). I'm distressed that I didn't get my French homework done on time even though the instructor is away until Thursday and perfectly glad to accept it then. I'm annoyed by my hair being too long to be short and too short to be long (you know how that is) and not something I can do much about since my favorite stylist is the one who wrecked it this time. It's annoying that Blogger is still not running smoothly (it took 20 minutes to load the template a minute (ha) ago and although it's a bit better than yesterday I mean, come one, shut us out for whatever time it takes to fix it but don't leave it like this. Maybe Runway's episode tomorrow will perk me up. Or tonight's dinner of bowtie pasta. Something will. Hey, aren't you glad I shared?
